The Frontier Ideas a16z Wants to Fund Now | Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz & Chris Dixon

A16z is expanding its crypto fund into a broader frontier fund to invest in 'outer planet' ideas that fall outside existing verticals, driven by the belief that AI is creating unprecedented opportunities for ambitious startups. The partners argue that AI is widening the gap between early adopters and incumbents, enabling small teams to build full-stack companies and potentially reshaping entire industries. They emphasize the importance of backing entrepreneurs with original ideas, even if they seem too early or risky, and highlight the growing role of open-source AI in fostering innovation and safety.

Should You Trust ChatGPT With Your Health?

OpenAI's health AI lead argues that AI can raise the floor of healthcare by providing free, trustworthy health intelligence to hundreds of millions of users, and raise the ceiling by enabling proactive, personalized care. He emphasizes that the models are trained with specialized healthcare data and evaluated by a global network of physicians to balance safety with user expectations, and that AI should act as a safety net, not a replacement for doctors. The cost of health intelligence is plummeting, making it accessible, but the full transformation of care will require partnerships and integration into existing workflows.

Why a $1M Startup Wasn’t Worth Building in the Age of AI

Jean Denis, CEO of Town, argues that a $1M startup in SMB tax was not worth building in the age of AI because incumbents could adopt the technology faster than a new entrant could gain market share, especially given the annual sales cycle. He pivoted to building an AI assistant that works with email and calendar, focusing on a horizontal product that can be customized for various roles. He emphasizes that the key to adoption is showing value through concrete automations rather than a text box, and that the future involves less human-in-the-loop as AI becomes more capable.

Why AI Can Write Code But Can’t Keep It Running (Yet)

AI can write code but struggles with operations because the state space of running systems is vast and unpredictable, unlike the constrained distribution of code. The speaker argues that AI can handle operational tasks by detecting anomalies and running experiments, but it cannot yet manage a distributed cluster autonomously. He suggests that the path forward involves constraining environments and using AI to assist humans in debugging rather than replacing them.

What Happens When AI Agents Can Spend Your Money?

AI agents are transitioning from recommending purchases to executing them, which requires secure payment credentials and new standards. The speaker argues that agentic commerce will shift from walled-garden solutions like Stripe's one-time cards to open standards such as agentic tokens, which preserve chargeback rules and merchant relationships. However, merchants like Amazon may block agents to protect advertising revenue, and disputes over agent errors remain unresolved.
