How India Became an IT Outsourcing Giant

India's rise as an IT outsourcing giant was driven by a combination of government policies, such as the Software Technology Parks and liberalization, and the strategic adoption of offshore development models. The Y2K crisis provided a massive opportunity, generating billions in revenue and establishing Indian firms like TCS and Infosys as global players. However, recent growth has slowed, and the industry faces challenges from AI, with companies like Infosys and TCS experiencing significant stock declines and layoffs.

IGBTs Took Silicon Power to the Next Level

The IGBT combines the voltage-controlled switching of a MOSFET with the high-current capability of a BJT, making it a dominant power semiconductor for applications like EVs, wind turbines, and air conditioners. Baliga at GE and Becke and Wheatley at RCA independently developed early versions, but latch-up issues were solved by Nakagawa at Toshiba, who lowered the saturation current to prevent thermal runaway. The speaker argues that the IGBT's ability to enable variable-speed motors in household appliances and renewable energy systems is its greatest legacy.

ASML’s New Multibeam Inspection Tool is Familiar

ASML's new eScan 2200 multibeam inspection tool revives technology from the failed Dutch startup Mapper Lithography, which originally aimed to replace EUV lithography with massively parallel electron beams. The speaker explains that Mapper's approach, using thousands of low-power beamlets to avoid the stochastic blur that doomed earlier SCALPEL systems, ultimately couldn't compete with EUV's rising throughput and went bankrupt in 2018. ASML acquired Mapper's IP and repurposed it for high-speed e-beam inspection, which is needed to find smaller defects in EUV-era chips and in 3D structures like 3D NAND.

Is TSMC Coming to Texas?

TSMC's potential Texas fab is likely to proceed, possibly with Elon Musk's Terafab as an anchor customer, though the deal is not yet approved. The speaker argues that a joint venture modeled on the Sony-TSMC partnership in Japan is plausible, but notes that cultural clashes and the need for a massive purchase commitment could complicate the arrangement. The move would mark a significant step in TSMC's globalization, with overseas investment potentially surpassing domestic spending within a few years.

The Fall of Brazil's Armored Vehicle King

Brazil's armored vehicle industry collapsed in the 1990s after the end of the Iran-Iraq war and the loss of government support, argues the speaker. The company Engesa overextended itself developing the Osorio tank, relying on foreign components and accumulating massive debt, and lost the Saudi contract to the US M1 Abrams. The speaker concludes that the company's dependence on military ties and risky financial practices led to its bankruptcy.
