Newfoundland and Labrador is strategically positioned to support NATO and Canadian defense efforts, leveraging its geography, climate, and world-class ocean technology, the minister argues. He highlights the province's ports, critical minerals, and skilled workforce as key assets, and notes that certification processes from offshore oil and gas can be applied to defense contracts, opening opportunities for local suppliers. He emphasizes the need to manage labor challenges and avoid boom-bust cycles, citing the Kiewit facility in Marystown as an example of rural revitalization.

EP8 Michelle Simms | CEO Advantage St. John's on #ForwardFlank

Michelle Simms argues that Newfoundland and Labrador's capital region is strategically positioned to become a key player in the defense sector, leveraging its extensive ocean testing facilities and geographic location as a gateway to the Arctic. She highlights the region's equidistance between the Arctic, New York, central Canada, and Europe, and notes recent investments like Lockheed Martin's $11 million in Avalon Holographics as signs of growing momentum. The region's collaborative ecosystem, including government, industry, and academia, is central to its appeal.

Dave Murrin | Director General NRC OCRE on #ForwardFlank

Dave Murrin argues that Newfoundland and Labrador's unique expertise in harsh environments and ice engineering makes it indispensable to Canada's and NATO's Arctic defense efforts. He highlights the NRC's ice tank, the only one in North America, and the region's workforce experienced in managing icebergs from the oil and gas industry as key differentiators. He advises the province to focus on its niche rather than competing broadly, noting that NATO's Diana test center certification already recognizes this capability.

Danny Breen

St. John's mayor Danny Breen argues that Newfoundland and Labrador is strategically positioned to play a key role in NATO defense, serving as a last stop before the North for maintenance and provisioning. He highlights the city's dockyard revitalization, the Marine Institute's research, and the province's harsh climate as assets for training and testing. Breen also emphasizes the region's resilient workforce and community spirit, which he believes are essential for attracting defense companies and supporting national defense.
