A brief history of the Eames Shell Chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames

The Eames Shell Chair, introduced in 1950, was the first mass-produced plastic chair, made possible by fiberglass technology that was strong, lightweight, durable, and low-cost. The design evolved through iterations, including a stacking base in 1955 that led to widespread use in schools and hospitals, and later shifted to recycled polypropylene in 2001 due to sustainability concerns. The chair's enduring form and material innovations have kept it iconic for over 70 years.
