Character Design Hack - Just Use Your Own Face!

Character designers can use their own face as a starting point for creating diverse characters by mapping the skull's key landmarks and then warping a photo with tools like Liquify. The speaker demonstrates that maintaining the relative positions and connections of bones like the zygomatic, maxilla, and mandible keeps a design reading as human, even when proportions are drastically altered. He argues this method is a useful study for practicing structure and expanding design possibilities, though he notes it's not how he would approach a professional job.

Improve Your Character Design - Day 2 Free Workshop

Character design is applied figure drawing where you inject your opinions into shapes, and the key is to avoid predictability by offsetting symmetry and breaking flow. Marco Bucci demonstrates this with a miserable maid character, showing how he skews a circle, uses T-intersections to break shapes, and maintains a shape DNA of curves. He also emphasizes the importance of big, medium, small distribution and using negative space to define foreign elements like bionic shoes.

Time to Draw Better Figures - Day 1 Free Workshop

Gesture drawing should prioritize capturing the emotion and weight of a pose over proportional accuracy, using tools like lines of action, curves, and cylinders to map the figure quickly. The speaker demonstrates starting with the head, finding the line of action, and using perspective and anatomy to refine the gesture, emphasizing that this process builds a mental library for drawing from imagination. He notes that while proportion becomes important later, feeling the pose is key at this stage.
