Marling Baits — searchable YouTube transcripts & AI Q&A

Can Fish Handle This Much Vibration?

The speaker builds an oversized blade bait from a saw blade and wood, then tests it in a creek, but it fails to catch fish. He concludes that the blade bait's size and vibration may not be effective in that environment, as he catches a smallmouth bass on a smaller 1.7 lure immediately after switching. He notes that the blade bait is the thumpiest he's made and dives fast, but it didn't entice bites.

Fishing Lure that Jumps Out of the Water

The $90 Jumping Joe lure tangles constantly and fails to catch fish, so the speaker builds a smaller, metal version from a saw blade. The homemade lure catches bluegill and a 28.5-inch striper, proving that a well-designed small bait outperforms the expensive commercial one.

Making a Weight Transfer Glide Bait

The speaker builds a weight transfer glide bait to improve casting distance, but finds the initial design unstable and prone to rolling on its side. Adding extra tungsten weight near the tail improves stability and action, though the bait still struggles to catch fish in the changed river conditions. The speaker concludes that the bait works better as a musky lure than for the local bass.

How Good was the First Lipless CrankBait?

The first lipless crankbait, the Pico Perch, was invented by Fred Nicholas in the 1940s and remains a classic design, but the speaker found it unreliable for hooking fish, losing several strikes. He then crafted a modified version with a lip-like extension, which proved more effective, catching a 32-inch striper, though a giant fish pulled the screw eye out, prompting him to upgrade to stronger hardware.
