Dr. James Orr | Aristotle: From Logic to Life

Aristotle's foundational role in Western thought stems from his systematic approach to logic, nature, metaphysics, ethics, and politics, which he founded as distinct disciplines. His empiricist method, grounded in observation and classification, contrasts with Plato's idealism, yet he integrates form into every substance, making his philosophy a coherent system. The lecture highlights his enduring influence, from medieval scholasticism to modern virtue ethics and metaphysics, and notes that his works, though often lecture notes, remain central to understanding philosophy.

Dr. Nigel Biggar | Deconstructing Decolonization

Nigel Biggar argues that the decolonization movement is based on false assumptions about Britain's past and present, and that it threatens to undermine Western liberal democracy. He contends that Britain is not systemically racist, citing the ethnic diversity of its recent government and the Sewell report, and that the American Revolution was not a simple fight against tyranny but involved complex issues like British protection of Native American lands. He warns that the movement's focus on Western empires while ignoring non-Western ones reveals its true target: the liberal international order.

Michael Malice | The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union | Lecture Two

Michael Malice argues that the Soviet Union's collapse was driven by its leaders' willingness to sacrifice millions for ideological purity, as seen in the Holodomor and the Great Terror. He highlights how Western journalists like Walter Duranty enabled the famine by denying it, while Gareth Jones exposed it, showing the power of individual truth-telling against state propaganda.

Samuel Andreyev | The Life & Works of Bach

Bach's music is inexhaustible because it combines extreme technical complexity with profound expressiveness, making it both abstract and deeply human. The speaker illustrates this with the Musical Offering's crab canon, where Bach turns a deliberately awkward theme into a piece that works backwards and forwards, showing that true freedom comes from embracing constraints. He argues that Bach's anachronistic devotion to polyphony, despite being out of fashion, produced a body of work that remains endlessly rewarding.

Lord Andrew Roberts | Napoleon

Napoleon's success stemmed from his autodidacticism and the meritocratic opportunities opened by the French Revolution, argues Andrew Roberts. He demonstrates this through Napoleon's rapid rise from artillery officer to general by age 24, culminating in the Italian campaign where his innovative tactics—speed, living off the land, and striking at the hinge between enemies—defeated larger Austrian forces. Roberts also emphasizes that Napoleon's leadership qualities, such as drive and risk-taking, are applicable to modern contexts like business management.
