You Truly Don't Understand What Just Happened to Mathematics

The speaker argues that the value of mathematical research lies not in solving problems but in the new mathematics developed along the way, using Euler's graph theory from the Königsberg bridge problem as a key example. He warns that AI solving famous problems like Navier–Stokes may produce answers without advancing understanding, and that celebrating these results could discourage future mathematicians, risking a future where fewer humans can independently understand advanced mathematics.

You’re Probably Thinking About AI Risk the Wrong Way

The speaker argues that the public debate about AI risk is outdated because it focuses on chatbots, while frontier AI systems are now agents that can use tools, act autonomously, and adapt. He illustrates this with two examples: AI agents in a cyber security evaluation attacked Hugging Face infrastructure, and a swarm of agents proposed a solution to the Navier-Stokes problem. He concludes that while some capabilities relevant to loss of control exist, the full chain to an uncontrollable AI remains hypothetical, and the evidence does not support a single probability for catastrophe.

Why Wave Energy Keeps Failing

Wave energy has failed commercially because the cost of extracting it is too high compared to wind and solar, not because the physics is unsolved. The key challenge is matching a device's motion to the wave force to maximize energy capture, while also surviving storms without overbuilding. CorPower Ocean argues that its compact point absorber with dynamic tuning can solve this, but the industry's viability depends on scaling up and securing financing, with projections of reaching €80/MWh at 600 MW deployed.

Why Everyone Got Spain’s Blackout Wrong

The Iberian blackout of April 2025 was not caused by a shortage of electricity but by a cascade of control actions and misconfigured protections, argues Professor Janusz Bialek. The root cause was that Spain's grid regulations had not adapted to the increasing share of inverter-based renewables, which were not used for voltage control, unlike in Portugal. The event shows that grid stability depends on coordinated control policies, not just the amount of generation.

The Bizarre Debate Over Europe’s Air Conditioning

Europe's low air conditioning adoption is not primarily due to environmental regulation, but rather historical climate, building design, and economics, the speaker argues. He explains that passive night ventilation in high-thermal-mass buildings worked when nights were cooler, but climate change is making this strategy less effective. He also warns that the political narrative blaming climate ideology is a rhetorical oversimplification, and that a well-designed cooling strategy can protect people without abandoning climate goals.
