I’m Sorry But Small Nuclear Reactors Are Basically Over

Small modular reactors are essentially over because they fail to deliver the cost advantages they promised, argues Sabine Hossenfelder. Even with expected cost reductions, a recent analysis in Nature Communications finds SMRs are not competitive in current U.S. electricity markets, and the smaller size increases relative shielding costs. Government subsidies are propping up the industry, but without them, many startups face bankruptcy.

A 14-Year-Old’s New Theory of the Universe

A 14-year-old's prize-winning theory that dark energy arises from entropy at the universe's boundary is not new and, as the speaker argues, amounts to a model with extra free parameters rather than a breakthrough. The speaker praises the youth's engagement but criticizes the low standards in the field, noting that the idea merely fits data without deeper explanatory power.

It Shouldn’t Exist But it Does: Astronomers Find Green Star

Green stars do exist, contrary to earlier assumptions, because dense atmospheres around white dwarfs can absorb large parts of the spectrum, leaving a greenish hue. For example, a white dwarf 280 light-years away in Draco has sodium and calcium in its atmosphere that remove orange and violet light, making it appear pale yellow-green. Only about 3-4% of white dwarfs show such colors, with others appearing pink, purple, turquoise, or blue depending on their atmospheric composition.

Huge Problem With Our Universe Has Simple Answer, Physicists Say

Physicists propose that primordial magnetic fields could resolve the Hubble tension by allowing cosmic microwave background light to escape earlier, which would change the inferred Hubble rate. However, the speaker argues this solution only weakens the tension, not eliminates it, and rates the claim 5 out of 10 on her bullshit meter.

Finally Some Good News From Climate Change?

Global warming is likely to reduce the number of tropical cyclones and hurricanes, but the storms that do form will be more intense, with higher wind speeds and more rainfall. This conclusion comes from a new analysis of 14 climate models, which found that more warming leads to fewer cyclones globally, though the effect varies by hemisphere. The speaker notes that this prediction is fairly robust because it doesn't depend heavily on model details, but cautions that the exact numbers remain uncertain.
