Why This Director Pretended to Be Incompetent

William Greaves deliberately acted incompetent while directing Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One to provoke his cast and crew into rebelling and taking creative control, testing whether spontaneous creativity could emerge when established hierarchies fail. The crew eventually revolted by secretly filming their own frustrations, which Greaves later incorporated into the film, demonstrating that the system he designed succeeded beyond his direct control. The film's eventual recognition, including its addition to the National Film Registry, underscores its lasting impact as a revolutionary experiment in filmmaking.
