Restoring An Enduring South with Jon Harris

Jon Harris argues that the South's distinctiveness today rests primarily on its religiosity, which serves as the moral conscience of the country, rather than on agrarianism alone. He emphasizes that southerners must self-consciously defend their traditions, including through local civic involvement and family history, to counter the demoralizing effects of online pessimism and cultural erosion. Harris also cautions against despair, urging individuals to steward their immediate responsibilities and trust in God's providence.

How We Are Missing The Mark

Dr. Alan Harrelson argues that Southern conservatives should abandon secessionist goals and instead focus on cultural and spiritual renewal through education and the church. He emphasizes the importance of local regional identities within the American nation, citing the agrarians' rejection of industrialism and the need for good manners and kindness in political discourse. He cautions against vulgarity and the idea that the Constitution has failed, advocating for scraping off its 'barnacles' rather than discarding it.

The Reality of God’s Presence and Power

Dr. Alan Harrelson argues that the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist should evoke profound emotional and physical responses, as seen in a viral video of a priest weeping before the Blessed Sacrament. He shares personal stories of the Holy Spirit's guidance, such as being prompted to pray for a sick woman at a restaurant and receiving confirmation to move, to illustrate that God's power is real and active. He emphasizes that becoming Catholic did not mean leaving his Pentecostal background but finding the fullness of faith.

Is The South Dead?

Southern conservatism is a distinct intellectual tradition rooted in agrarianism, particularism, and suspicion of centralized power, not merely a set of cultural signifiers, argues Dr. Alan Harrelson. He traces this tradition to figures like John Randolph and John Taylor of Caroline, who opposed federal overreach and championed states' rights, and he suggests that reviving this voice is crucial for the future of American conservatism. Harrelson also contends that the American Revolution was a restoration of ancient legal traditions rather than a radical break, and he encourages young Southerners to study thinkers like Richard Weaver and Wendell Berry to recover their regional identity.
