Bruno questions Man Utd tactics, is Carrick done? And Arsenal's Bayern thriller

The panel argues that Manchester United's recent defeat to Como highlights deeper tactical and structural issues, with Bruno Fernandes publicly questioning the team's pressing strategy and Michael Carrick struggling to implement a coherent system. They suggest that while sacking Carrick may provide a short-term fix, the club's underlying problems, including poor recruitment and ownership, will persist. The discussion also covers Arsenal's draw with Bayern Munich, praising Harry Kane's performance and noting Arsenal's tactical flexibility.

Brighton masterclass, fears for Palace & would Hürzeler suit Man Utd?

Brighton's strong start is partly due to Fabian Hürzeler's tactical flexibility, as injuries to wingers led to a more central, narrow attack that excels at quick transitions and counter-pressing. The speaker argues that while Brighton may be overperforming expected goals, their coaching and squad depth could sustain a top-four challenge. Crystal Palace's struggles under Pierre Sage are attributed to losing key defenders and trying to play more expansively, leaving them exposed defensively.

How Newcastle's tactics have changed (and stayed the same)

Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle retains Eddie Howe's direct, intense style but shifts the tactical details, notably by using a possession-controlling midfielder who drops between the center-backs to bait the press. This change, along with a goalkeeper better suited to build-up play, allows Newcastle to achieve direct play through patient progression rather than Howe's long balls and counter-pressing. The speaker argues that personnel changes, not just formations, drive tactical flexibility.

Man Utd Martinez fallout & Real Madrid comeback

Man Utd's midfield problem, did Arsenal convince? & Chelsea's Caicedo return

The podcast argues that Manchester United's midfield pairing of Tielemans and Mayu is too similar physically and lacks balance, which was exposed by Tottenham's aggressive press in their 1-1 draw. The hosts suggest that United need to decide whether they want to be a counter-attacking or possession-based team, and that the return of Carlos Baleba could help, but he shouldn't be seen as a fix-all. They also note that distance covered is a poor indicator of performance, citing a study showing no correlation with points.
