How to Journal Like a Philosopher | Parker Settecase

Parker Settecase argues that journaling like a philosopher means using a notebook for active reasoning rather than passive quotation, as exemplified by Descartes' dianoia journal. He distinguishes this from commonplace books, which collect quotations, and suggests that writing helps construct and encode ideas, countering Socrates' critique of writing as a memory crutch. The conversation also explores other philosophical methods like aphorisms and the zibaldone, emphasizing that journaling is a practical way to extend the mind.

My Dumbest Reading Mistakes (and how to avoid them)

The speaker argues that the biggest reading mistakes stem from imbalanced approaches, such as being overly critical or overly charitable, relying solely on primary or secondary sources, and dismissing thinkers before reading them. He emphasizes the importance of balancing close and broad reading, accepting the limits of one's knowledge, and embracing rereading and intellectual wonder to deepen understanding. He illustrates these points with examples from his own experiences with philosophers like Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and Dostoevsky.

A Westerner's Introduction to Eastern Philosophy | Dr. Jessica Frazier

Dr. Jessica Frazier argues that Hindu philosophy is not primarily concerned with the existence of a personal God but with the nature of ultimate reality and the self, engaging in vigorous debates with Buddhist skeptics. She explains that concepts like the Atman are contested and not equivalent to the Western soul, and that Hindu thinkers offer arguments for an irreducible awareness and a grounded, structured reality. The conversation highlights how these metaphysical views connect to ethics and everyday religious practice, offering a rich alternative to Western philosophical frameworks.

Self-improvement has sold us a lie

Self-improvement can become harmful when a proxy metric replaces the original goal, a process called value capture, argues the speaker. He illustrates this with his own gym experience, where focusing on his one-rep max led to injury, and with examples like Steven Bartlett's reaction to wine and the looksmaxing community. The speaker suggests that while extreme self-optimization can be admirable for its energy, it often stems from a desire to escape the burden of freedom, and he proposes that a healthier approach involves enjoying the process rather than fixating on outcomes.

How the Internet Changed Our Relationships, Permanently | Professor Doug Campbell

Online friendships can never be as close as offline ones, argues philosopher Doug Campbell, because offline friends have access to a fuller range of cues, including unconscious behaviors that reveal our true selves. He illustrates this with the example of a student with imposter syndrome whose offline friends can see that their self-deprecation is unwarranted, while online friends only receive self-reports. However, online friendships do offer unique benefits, such as freedom from social pressures, allowing for greater candor.
