How to Conquer Bad Days at Your Startup

Bad days are an inevitable and valuable part of running a startup, argues Dalton and Michael, as they force founders to innovate and grow. They suggest confronting fears by asking "so what?" to realize the worst-case scenario is often manageable, and they emphasize that surviving bad days builds resilience and prepares you for future challenges. Even successful founders like Sam Altman face severe setbacks, so expecting bad days is crucial.

When to Convince AI Skeptics (or When to Move On)

The speakers argue that the most effective way to convince AI skeptics is through direct, personal experience rather than debate, such as giving someone a ride in a Tesla with full self-driving or sharing an AI account for a specific task. They also suggest that in a workplace, it's better to focus on outcomes and speed, like delivering a prototype quickly, rather than selling the AI itself. However, they caution that if management is blocking AI use, it may be time to consider leaving, as every month without AI is a month of lost learning.

Want to Build a Great Startup? Start Having Fun.

The speakers argue that founders can learn to enjoy hard work, or 'type two fun,' which is a key advantage for long-term success. They suggest reframing discomfort as rewarding and using it as motivation, while cautioning that this mindset requires maintaining basic self-care and should not lead to self-destruction.

How Founders Win at Fundraising, Sales, and Hiring

Winning in fundraising, sales, and hiring comes down to leverage, which is the ability to walk away because you have more value to offer than you're asking for. Founders should focus on building traction and creating a pipeline of options rather than perfecting pitches or chasing individual deals, as this pre-work makes negotiations easier and more successful. The speakers argue that high leverage situations, like having many customers or candidates, allow you to be selective and avoid being beholden to any single outcome.

How to Set Goals Before Product-Market Fit

Pre-product-market-fit startups should focus on getting a small number of users who love the product, not on growth metrics like 7% weekly growth. The speakers argue that graphs and analytics are useless with zero users, and that founders should instead aim for 100 users who love the product before graduating to graphs. They illustrate this with examples like Gmail and Stripe, which took time to build something people loved before scaling.
