Everything you missed from Supabase Select 2026

Supabase announced a major platform update at Select 2026, introducing Supabase Compute for running serverless Linux instances next to the database, and acquiring Terso to offer SQLite-based Spark instances for scaling out to billions of databases. The keynote emphasized three themes—build, operate, and scale—with key improvements like declarative config files, faster local development, and the Oriole DB storage engine that doubles performance. The speaker argues that these changes simplify backend development and deployment, making it easier for both humans and AI agents to build and manage applications.

The future of AI...

Jev is a classifier, not a generative LLM, and it processes data in a single pass to return a probability score, making it far cheaper and faster for classification tasks like spam detection. The speaker argues that developers have been overpaying for such tasks by using LLMs, and Jev's serverless API removes the need for training data and ML teams, turning a quarter-long project into an afternoon. However, Jev is not a replacement for LLMs; it's a complementary tool for specific jobs.

Supabase AMA - Weekly Changelog Live Stream Ep 12

The hosts argue that storing images in a database is generally a bad idea, recommending CDNs for better performance and scalability. They discuss a technique of storing tiny base64 thumbnails in the database for instant placeholders, but conclude it's not worth the trade-offs. They also suggest caching and optimizing queries to reduce egress costs.
